"Photography records the gamut of feelings written on the human face, the beauty of the earth and skies that man has inherited, and the wealth and confusion man has created.  It is a major force in explaining man to man."  -Edward Steichen  MORE

Mr. Fowler | rfowler@lfanet.org | LFANET.ORG | AIM SCREENAME: LAKEFORESTART

This week we will develop film from Assignment #2 and create a contact sheet for the film.  There will be a demo on contact sheet printing and enlargement printing.

Read the section in our course book on contact sheet printing. 138 in the old book, page 203 in the new book.

We will read and respond to questions from Susan Sontag's essay In Plato's Cave.

Friday there will be a check of course materials.  You should have a notebook or note paper, a folder, and a binder or box binder. You should also purchase paper at this time. I recommend at least 50 sheets.

Extra Credit: In a few sentences, offer your interpretation of Plato's Allegory of the Cave. Worth 20 pts. Post your response to our Forum. You will need to sign into our forum to post your response to this discussion.

SECTION 1: A6 - B6 - C4 - D4 - E6 - F4

SECTION 2: A3 - B8 - C1 - E3 - F1 - G3

Shooting Assignment #3

Part 2

For shooting assignment #3 I want you to concentrate on composition. There are many ways to compose a photograph. There are "rules" that people often use,  but ultimately the composition of your photograph is entirely up to you.  This exercise in composition will help you identify aesthetically pleasing compositions when photographing and allow you to make composition adjustments based on your own aesthetic choices.  You may find yourself already making these composition decisions when framing your images.  Use all 36 frames of your film to explore the following composition techniques:

  • Framing

  • Diagonal or Crosslines

  • Rule-of-Thirds

  • Isolated Subject

  • Filling the Frame

  • 50/50 / Symmetry

  • Centered

  • Focal Point

Shoot at minimum one picture for each technique (some pictures may utilize more than one technique simultaneously).
