ESSAY: REFLECTING ON
PHOTOGRAPHIC
RE-PRESENTATION Write
a two page (minimum)
essay reflecting on
the past semester of
study of the
photographic medium. Some
questions you may
consider: I.
What is photography? Are
photographs
truthful? Is
there a difference
between analog
photography and
digital
photography? Has
the way you
view/interpret
photographs, both
those you make and
those made by
others, changed? Has
the way you use
photographs changed?
Why or why not? II.
Reflect on your
semester making
images and the
photographs you
created. What was
difficult? What did
you not expect? What
surprised you? What
did you learn about
yourself? What did
you learn about
others/the world
around you. 2

Assignment 5 Emulating
a Photographer Choose
a photographer whose
work you really
enjoy either for its
aesthetic qualities,
subject matter, or
both. You might
select a few from
your own research or
by choosing someone
from our list Photographer
List . I would
choose a
photographer who you
can realistically
emulate. Study
their images. The
subject matter
itself may not be as
important as the
composition,
lighting, or common
perspective. After
choosing a
photographer,
confirm your
selection with Mr.
Fowler. Due:

Assignment 4: Tableau
Vivants, Portraits,
Extended Exposures Assignment
4 is going to
require that you
activate all of your
creative thinking
skills and challenge
yourself more than
you have on any
other assignment.
The goal of this
assignment is to
make visually
interesting images
while thinking
critically and being
fully aware of your approach to
making photographs. 1.
Devote 5-6 of your
frames to images
that follow the
characterstics of
the photographic
tableaux. Remember
that these images
typically focus on
the "heightened
moment".
The gaze of the
subject is often on
some other object or
figure in the scene
or outside the our
view. Lighting often
plays an important
role in focusing the
viewer's attention
on specific areas of
the image. The
photographic
tableaux attempts to
tell a story in a
single image. 2.
Devote several
frames to portrait
and self portrait
photographs. Does a
self-portrait or
portrait need to
include an entire
face, or a face at
all? Could a
portrait be part of
your body, or some
inanimate object? 3.
Devote several
frames experimenting
with extended
exposures. Use your
cameras's bulb
function to create
exposures where the
shutter duration is
apparent. Scan
all good
photographs. Scan
pinholes.

- Printing
Assignment
Make
three
"good"
prints from
Assignment 3:
Composition. Each
print should
represent a
different
compositional
technique you
used. A good
print is one with
adequate exposure
and contrast.
Borders should be
even and the image
should not be
cropped. The print
should be adequately
developed and clean
of any surface
residue.
3
Prints are due at
the end of the class
on B Day, Monday
10/19.
